Research Triangle Park, NC, USA (29 October 2013) — The Program Committee of the 2014 ISA Process Measurement and Control/Safety and Security Joint Division Symposium has issued a Call for Papers, inviting authors, innovators, thought leaders and other automation professionals in the instrumentation, communications and control system fields to submit abstracts for presentation consideration at the event.
The symposium, to be held 6-9 October 2014 in Houston, Texas, USA, is a collaboration between ISA’s Process Measurement and Control Division (PMCD) and ISA’s Safety and Security Division, with additional participation by ISA’s Chemical and Petroleum Industries Division (ChemPID).
Engineers, technicians and plant managers from the oil and gas, refining, chemical, petrochemical and other process industries will benefit from a world-class technical program, including expert-led educational tracks, engaging keynote presentations and in-depth panel discussions and training courses. The intensive, three-day joint event also will feature a substantial vendor exhibit, standards committee meetings, and numerous networking opportunities and social activities.
“The Houston market has so many experienced process professionals across so many different industries, and we all have critical interests in common, such as instrumentation, communication networks and control systems,” says Edward Naranjo, Ph.D., FS Eng. (TÜV Rheinland), NPDP, Global Technical Product Manager at General Monitors who serves as the Director of ISA’s PMCD Division. “Our friends in the ISA Safety and Security Division are developing a top-notch program as well, featuring sessions on safety instrumented systems, cybersecurity, and more, and these are topics that our process automation community also regards as instrumental to their operational success.”
Since the event will be held in Houston, the oil and gas hub of the US, and will present such a wide range of interconnected topics—in process measurement, control, safety, security, and chemical and energy processing—attendees are sure to “gain insights and information they can’t get anywhere else,” says Paul Gruhn, P.E., ISA Fellow, Global Process Safety Consultant at Rockwell Automation who serves as Conference Chair of the ISA Safety and Security Division. “The technical material presented will be extensive, and professionals will have a lot of choices on the sessions they attend.”
In the specific area of safety and security, attendees will “benefit greatly from the networking opportunities, and the answers they receive straight from the members of the ISA84 (Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector) and ISA99 (Industrial Automation and Control Systems Security) committees,” Gruhn adds.
The ISA PMCD technical program for 2014
“I’m extremely excited to be involved in assembling the technical program at the event,” says Kash Behdinan, Ph.D., PMP, a lead systems analyst at Chevron North American Exploration & Production who is serving as Program Chair for the ISA PMCD component of the 2014 symposium. “Attendees will gain first-hand access to a wealth of professional knowledge and expertise, and have the opportunity to share experiences with and learn from their peers.”
Dr. Behdinan, who has served as the Technical Chair for ISA’s International Instrumentation Symposium for the past two years, says the event’s content-rich technical sessions, tutorials and workshops will examine the key trends and critical issues in:
• Automation and control systems, including sensors, control hardware and software, and final elements
• Flow technology
• Pressure technology
• Temperature technology
• Level technology
• Field calibration technology
• Instrumentation
• Smart measurements
• Process variables
