CDC converter enables touch-control sensitivity in portables

Part provides accurate measurement and improved responsiveness for user interface controls

Allowing designers to quickly add responsive user controls, such as scroll wheels and touch pads, to portable electronic devices, the AD7147 CapTouch capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC) provides accurate measurement and responsiveness, and has an active shield feature for improved noise performance. The part typically consumes 1 mA in full-power mode and 50 µA in low-power modea 20% reduction compared with competitive products on the market—while also offering, at only 2 µA, the industry’s lowest shutdown power consumption.

The configurable CDC features 13 capacitance inputs and femtofarad resolution, an SPI-compatible serial interface, an I2 C-compatible serial interface (AD7147-1), and on-chip sensitivity algorithms that compensate for changes in temperature and humidity, and ensure that users with different finger sizes receive the same responsive sensor performance. Housing is in 24-pin LFCSP packages, and operating voltage is from 2.7 to 3.3 V. ($1.30 ea/1,000—available now.)
