Ceva adds UWB radar platform

Ceva, Inc. has extended its RivieraWaves ultra-wideband (UWB) IP to support UWB radar for child presence detection (CPD). CPD detects and alerts if a child or pet is accidently left in a vehicle.

Euro NCAP and China CNCAP are supporting CPD, and the Hot Cars Act has passed in the U.S. and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently reviewing CPD guidance. Since 1998, more than 900 children have died in hot cars and more than 50% of them were left behind unknowingly, according to Consumer Reports.

Supporting UWB-Radar for CPD as specified by Europe NCAP and other similar specifications, the RivieraWaves UWB radar platform is adept at presence sensing object movements and picking up micro-movements down to breathing rates. The UWB radar sensors also address the privacy concerns of in-cabin sensing systems, supports low-light operation and is cost effective in premium to budget vehicles by reusing the Secure Digital Key UWB anchor points, which are increasingly popular in cars, according to Ceva.

The UWB radar solution is an add-on software package for the existing RivieraWaves UWB PHY and MAC IP. The solution features breath per minute (bpm) detection for CPD with less than 1 bpm resolution and leverages a coherent demodulation architecture and advanced ranging algorithms.

The RivieraWaves UWB system is said to deliver excellent distance and angle measurements within the cabin environment. It also can be optimized for a variety of environments, including a configurable number of antennas. It coexists with the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key, which allows for the reuse of Digital Key UWB anchor hardware.

Although the UWB radar solution is focused on child detection, the RivieraWaves UWB technology provides low power ultra-wideband IP for mobile, automotive, consumer and IoT applications. It can generate intruder alerts, gesture control and automatic airbag deactivation. And beyond use in vehicles, it can be used in applications such as cot infant monitoring, power-saving features for laptops and TVs and general utility management in smart buildings.

Ceva’s UWB solution is a low power ultra-wideband MAC and PHY digital platform IP based on 802.15.4 HRP, the FiRa Consortium and the CCC requirements. It delivers centimeter-level accuracy and robust location information through time-of-flight (ToF) ranging and angle-of-arrival (AoA) processing, securely. By using a flexible radio interface, the RivieraWaves UWB can be deployed with the customers’ own RF technology or with Ceva partners’ RF IP. It also offers FiRa MAC software, FiRa framework software, automotive grade CCC Digital Key 3.0 MAC software and radar/CPD software.

In addition, the RivieraWaves UWB platform IP can be integrated with the RivieraWaves Bluetooth connectivity IP in multi-mode low power wireless SoCs for smartphones, automotive and other applications

Ceva featured the UWB radar solution at embedded world 2023, March 14-16, in Nuremburg, Germany.
