Chips aid MPU I/O expansion

The STMPE2401 and STMPE801 Xpander logic chips help engineers overcome the limited number of I/O ports in microprocessor- and microcontroller-based embedded systems. The low-power small QFN16-, microTFBGA25-, and microTFBGA36-packaged ICs can be assigned many I/O-intensive tasks on a CPU.

The devices use I2C serial peripheral interface and provide a 96-key keypad controller, a PWM for LED brightness adjustment, a three-wire rotating-wheel controller, and A/D and D/A converters. These features are achieved with minimum change on the existing microprocessor firmware, resulting in a flexible cost-competitive expansion solution. (Ea/100,000: STMPE2401, $0.80; STMPE801, $1.50—available now.)
