Single chip monitors NiMH and NiCd batteries

Device's implementation can occupy less than 1/2 sq. in. of pc-board
space

Offered as the first integrated solution for comprehensive
battery-capacity monitoring, the bq2010 Gas Gauge IC provides accurate and
repeatable measurements of the available charge in NiMH and NiCd
rechargeable batteries. The device directly displays available battery
capacity using LEDs without an external processor. The battery-charge
state and other battery-management information can also be provided over a
single-pin serial port for a customized display. The bq2010 monitors a
voltage drop across a sense resistor connected in series between the
negative battery terminal and ground to determine charge and discharge
activity of the battery. NiMH and NiCd battery self-discharge is estimated
on an internal timer and temperature sensor. Internal registers include
available charge, temperature, capacity, battery ID, battery status, and
programming pin settings. Specifications of the bq2010 include a current
measurement dynamic range of greater than 500:1 and typical idle current
use of less than 75 microamps. The device is available in 16-pin narrow
DIPs and small-outline packages. (From $5.70 ea/1,000–samples available
now.) Benchmarq Microelectronics, Inc. Carrollton, TX David Heacock
