Class D audio chipset reaches new power limits
Audio driver IC and MOSFET combine to reduce board size by 60% for 50 to 500-W Class D audio amplifiers
The IRS2092 integrated audio driver IC with protected PWM switching and a choice of digital audio MOSFETs targets new power limits for Class D audio amplifiers from — 50 to 500 W. In a 100-W application, the audio driver and MOSFET set reduces board size by 60% and eliminates 20% of the parts from the typical bill of materials. The chipset targets home theater, home stereo, active speaker, musical instrument, and professional audio applications.
Based on a half bridge topology, the audio driver IC integrates the error amplifier, PWM comparator, gate driver, and robust protection circuitry. The design offers noise immunity and reduces start and stop click noise, while also reducing many complicated and costly design tasks such as overload protection.
The audio driver IC features an analog PWM modulator with frequency up to 800 kHz, programmable bidirectional overcurrent protection with self-reset control, undervoltage lockout protection (UVLO), and programmable preset deadtime for a scalable power design. The MOSFETs have been optimized for efficiency, THD, and EMI performance. A reference design is available. (Ea/10,000: IRS2092, $2.70; MOSFETs, $0.65 to $1.25available now.)
