CMD detector has higher gain than APD

The Siletz carrier-multiplication device (CMD) is a nanostructured InGaAs / InAlAs detector offering higher gain and lower noise than avalanche photodiodes (APDs). It overcomes APD limitations in the 0.9 to 1.6-µm band, including the eye-safe range beyond 1.3 µm.

The units have very low effective ionization coefficients (k ~ 0.02), and can be operated with low excess noise: F(M) ~ 2 up to gain M = 50. Maximum linear-mode gain is typically above M = 100. Applications include quantum cryptography, optical TDR, near-IR Raman and biomedical spectroscopy, singlet oxygen detection, and time-resolved emission detection for failure analysis.
