Collaboration yields two IoT kits integrated with AWS

Semtech has partnered with AWS and TensorIoT to develop asset tracking and smart building kits based on LoRa technology and the LoRaWAN protocol.

There are still big challenges around the deployment of devices and services for the internet of things (IoT), making the supply chain primed for partnerships that make it easier to connect to the cloud. The supply chain has been steadily moving toward more collaboration with the development of reference and development IoT kits to address challenges around cloud-based services, connectivity, and sensors in IoT solutions. Semtech Corp. is addressing these challenges with its latest partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and TensorIoT.

Together, Semtech, AWS, and TensorIoT, an AWS partner, developed two IoT kits – Asset Tracking and Smart Building – that integrate Semtech’s LoRa devices and the LoRaWAN protocol with AWS IoT services for enterprises and system integrators. TensorIoT created the cloud applications to connect the sensors to the AWS Services. This allows users to leverage all of the key AWS services, such as AWS IoT Core, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), and Amazon DynamoDB, as well as LoRa technology benefits of long range and low power consumption, which enables greater reach along with cost benefits.

These new kits are variants of earlier versions of the Asset Tracking and Smart Building kits. Though they are functionally the same, these new kits use the scalability of AWS and associated services to be truly scalable after deployment, said Semtech.

The kits provide out-of-the-box cloud dashboard capabilities to demonstrate the value of IoT solutions in the asset tracking and smart building industries. This is particularly important in industries such as shipping and logistics where it is critical to provide precise monitoring and traceability.

The Asset Tracking Kit allows users to locate outdoor assets around a specific location, including a regular automated inventory of assets that are available on site. The data generated by the GPS industrial trackers are shown on the cloud dashboard, enabling users to evaluate the benefits of tracking their assets with an out-of-the-box kit.

The Smart Building Reference Kit allows users to monitor doors and windows, desk and room presence, environmental conditions, and detect water intrusion in near-real time accessible via the cloud from anywhere. The portability of the kit also enables users to move sensor locations to assess for complete network coverage. The kit can be used in the event of an emergency to determine the number of employees in the area and to ensure they are evacuated quickly and safely.

For large-scale IoT deployments, these kits take advantage of AWS’s highly scalable services. These kits are built on the AWS IoT stack, and the cloud dashboards are designed to be serverless from the ground up, relying on native AWS offerings, such as AWS IoT Core, AWS IoT Core Rules Engine, AWS IoT Gateway, AWS Lambda, and AWS IoT Device Shadow, said Semtech.

The new kits are available from TensorIoT. Register here for two upcoming webinars, discussing the key benefits of the new Asset Tracking and Smart Building Kits.
