Color EL display is the first with off-the-shelf availability
A dual subpixel, bifiltering design allows up to eight colors to be
displayed
Although until now many color EL displays have been introduced as
prototypes, the EL640.350-DA1 claims to be the first such device made
available off the shelf. Up to eight colors can be displayed in the
display's 640 x 350-pixel format. The EL640.350-DA1 uses regular yellow
EL phosphor, with each pixel divided into two subpixels. A green filter is
placed over one subpixel, and a red filter is placed over the other. This
allows red, bright red, green, bright green, yellow, bright yellow,
orange, yellow-green, and black colors to be displayed. While the
display's capabilities are limited because it lacks blue, that color will
be added soon. In the meantime, the EL640.350-DA1 has a viewing angle of
140 degrees, an on-brightness of 4.4 fL and an off-brightness of 0.04 fL.
This translates to a contrast of 100:1. With control electronics included,
the 9-in.-diagonal display measures 226 (W) x 153 (H) x 20 (D) mm and
consumes 16 W. When the company exhibits at the Society of Information
Display Show and Conference this month in Seattle, WA, it will show the
EL640.350-DA1 as well as a full-color, VGA EL display that uses a red,
green, and blue phosphor. ($1,210 ea/1,000–samples, stock to 3 days; prod
qty, 4 to 6 weeks ARO.) Planar Systems, Beaverton, OR Jonathan Gilbert
