Compact analog MEMS mics offer crystal clarity

With high SNR and low THD, devices are available in versions with ±1-dB sensitivity

Said to be the world’s highest-performing ultra-compact silicon MEMS microphones, the low profile WM7110 and WM7120 with their high SNR performance bring crystal clear recording to a range of portable consumer apps. Further, their E versions, with a sensitivity tolerance of ± 1 dB, promise to change multi-microphone design.

The first devices in a family of MEMS microphones to be released over the next 12 months, the 4.72 x 3.76 x 1.25-mm WM7110 and the 3.76 x 2.95 x 1.10-mm WM7120 offer a 62-dB SNR (A-weighted) performance for a very low noise floor. The analog-output devices also feature THD of 0.5% max at 100 dB SPL, excellent linearity, and flat phase response. The E versions, with their industry-first sensitivity tolerance, permit better matching for beam-steering and noise-cancelling arrays.

Important for mass-produced consumer devices, the MEMS microphones can withstand surface-mount reflow soldering temperatures and be handled by pick-and-place equipment, unlike traditional electret condenser mics, Also, the MEMS devices typically consume just 160 µA, and are compatible with the company’s other audio products, such as active noise cancellation technology.
