As a vital link in the technology supply chain, Avnet Electronics Marketing is one of the largest globally trans-national electronic distributors of electronic components, enterprise computing, and storage products as well as embedded subsystems. Besides its core distribution services, Avnet also plays a significant role in supply-chain and design-chain services, logistics, solution, product assembly, device programming, computer system configuration and integration, and technical seminars.
Founded in New York City in 1921 by Charles Avnet, the company began by selling car antennas and kits for car radios. As the company began to grow, the focus shifted to electronic connectors. The company built its first big facility on North Moore Street, in the TriBeCa section of New York City's Manhattan island in 1944. In 1955, Avnet became incorporated and expanded to the West Coast to market to the military and aerospace industries in Sunnyville, CA. With their increase in customer satisfaction, fast and timely delivery, and increased product selection to capacitors and diodes, Avnet went public on the American Stock Exchange in 1959 and was featured in Forbes Fortune 500 in 1968 at number 467, becoming a competitor for bigger companies within the industry. In 1980, as a financial powerhouse, the company returned to its electronic roots. It invested in computer systems in 1982, thus building franchises for printers, computer systems, software, and digital equipment. Tony Hamilton, the company's CEO in the 1980s, integrated recognition programs, fight songs, and training programs to not only better employees within a positive environment, but to also guarantee future customer satisfaction.
