Computer-on-modules target edge AI applications

Congatec’s conga-SMX95 SMARC computer-on-modules deliver upgrade paths for AI applications that require high security.

Congatec GmbH has unveiled new high-performance computer-on-modules (COMs) with i.MX 95 processors from NXP Semiconductors. Extending its portfolio with NXP processors, the combination provides scalability and reliable upgrade paths for energy-efficient AI applications requiring high security, the company said.

The conga-SMX95 SMARC 2.1 modules are based on the next generation of NXP i.MX 95 application processors with four to six Arm Cortex-A55 cores. NXP is now using the new Arm Mali 3D graphics unit for the first time, which delivers up to three times the GPU performance compared to predecessors based on i.MX8 M Plus. The image signal processor (ISP) for hardware accelerated image processing is also new.

NXP’s new neural processing unit (NPU), eIQ Neutron, doubles the inference performance for AI accelerated machine vision, while the hardware-integrated EdgeLock secure enclave simplifies in-house cyber security implementation. The eIQ Neutron NPU enables AI accelerated workloads to be performed closer to the local device level and the eIQ software development environment simplifies the implementation of in-house machine-learning applications.

Designed for an industrial temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, these new SMARC modules are optimized for cost and energy efficiency. They offer 2× Gbit Ethernet with TSN for synchronized and deterministic network data transmission and LPDDR5, with inline ECC, for data security. Display interfaces include DisplayPort as the standard interface as well as the LVDS interface. Direct camera connectivity is delivered via 2× MIPI-CSI. In addition, the SMARC modules integrate a real-time domain for real-time controllers.

Applications include industrial production, machine vision and visual inspection, rugged HMIs, 3D printers and robotics controllers in AMR and AGV, as well as medical imaging and patient monitoring systems. Other applications include passenger seat back entertainment and fleet management for transportation, construction and farming.
