Concept car comes with drone that launches from car’s roof

Flying companion would be used to forewarn driver of traffic jams and other problems

To much fanfare, India’s Renault vehicle manufacturer just showed off its new futuristic concept car, Kwid, at the 2014 New Delhi Auto Expo. And while there was some buzz about the car’s ultra-modern design, all everyone could talk about after leaving the display was the group’s idea of including a drone with the vehicle.

The Kwid’s quadrocopter can be controlled manually from either a tablet or the car’s dashboard, and has the additional option of flying autonomously. While the actual launch of the copter might impress your fellow road warrior, the point of the drone is not so much style points; rather, it’s to act, more or less, like a “flying companion” for the small SUV, warning the driver of any upcoming traffic jams, hazards on the road, and more.

As mentioned earlier, the car is incredibly futuristic and forward thinking in its approach, and there are plenty of other features worth pointing out. For one, the wheel is centrally positioned and comes equipped with a tablet to the left of it.

The car also features a front-wheel-drive system and comes with a 1.2-liter turbocharged engine.

Laurens van den Acker, Senior VP, Renault Design, and Serge Mouangue, Brands Manager, further explain the Kwid in the clip below:

There’s no word on when, if ever, the Kwid will hit the market. Till then, we’ll just have to enjoy videos like the one below that feature the car with its “flying companion.”
