Conduction-cooled capacitors add direct-mount options

Illinois Capacitor expands its HC and LC series of conduction cooled capacitors used in resonant power circuitry with very high current demands

By Heather Hamilton, contributing writer

Illinois Capacitor recently expanded its lineup of HC and LC Series Conduction-Cooled Capacitors , which include new direct-mounting options for the HC Series. The devices target high-current demands required by resonant power circuitry. The new line is rated up to 1,200 A RMS and 1,100 VAC.

The LC Series capacitors enable safe handling of current and voltage in resonant power circuits, thanks to their flat copper plates. The HC capacitor’s direct-mount options utilize a through-hole design, compatible with a variety of current application configurations, and is available for four HC types. The direct-mounting configuration provides a high level of connectivity as well as heat transfer while eliminating the need for intermediate mounting hardware.

Devices are compatible with resonant circuits from 9 kHz to 1 MHz, depending on capacitance, with standard capacitance values ranging from 0.05 µF to 37 µF. The operating temperature range is −40°C to 85°C.  Both series use impregnated dielectrics to prevent corona problems within the capacitor, which can be a problem in high-power RF applications.

These capacitors use self-healing polypropylene film construction. They are also halogen-free and ROHS-compliant and meet UL94V0.

Applications include induction heating, RF amplifiers, welding equipment and electric vehicle charging stations, resonate power supplies, and medical imaging systems. Both HC and LC Series capacitors are available through Digi-Key and Mouser.
