Conference to explore MEMS impact on everyday life

On November 7 and 8, the MEMS Industry Group (MIG) will hold its Annual Executive Conference at the Meritage Resort & Spa in Napa, CA. The goal of this year's event, which brings together leaders from the MEMS supply chain and OEM users, is to explore the MEMS-enabled life.

The Meritage Resort & Spa in Napa, CA, will host this year's MEMS Congress as it explores MEMS in every-day life.

“At MEMS Executive Congress, we will take a collective look into the ways MEMS adds intelligence to the applications that have now become an essential part of our daily lives,” explains Karen Lightman, executive director, MIG. “Want to monitor your blood pressure or navigate your way through an airport or museum? Thank the MEMS inside your smartphone. Interested in an ingestible sensor that can help you avoid intestinal surgery? Or would you like to wear an armband that can tell you that you really did burn calories equivalent to a piece of chocolate cake? MEMS makes digital health a reality. And beyond these personal mobile devices, we see MEMS-based wireless sensor networks monitoring environmental conditions, the structural health of buildings and bridges, and so much more. At MEMS Executive Congress attendees will engage with influential, innovative speakers on these and other topics that are driving the MEMS industry forward.”

Over the course of the two days, panelists and featured presenters will explore applications of MEMS technology in wireless health, mobile platforms (including wearable technology), wireless sensor networks, and the Internet of Things. On the afternoon of Thursday, November 7, the conference will begin with an examination of where the market is headed, with Analyst Jeremie Bouchaud of IHS Global and Yole Développement President & CEO Jean-Christophe Eloy presenting their companies' latest research. There will also be MIG's inaugural MEMS Elevator Pitch Session, which will give early-stage MEMS companies a platform for reaching potential investors.

On Friday, November 8, attendees will see the popular MEMS Technology Showcase, a competition featuring a selection of unique MEMS applications, and another new event — the MEMS Innovation Awards. The day will also be marked by two keynote speakers: Gregg Bartlett, chief technology officer, GlobalFoundries, and Donald Jones, vice president, global strategy & market development, Qualcomm Life. In the morning, Bartlett will discuss how MEMS in going mainstream, as CMOS foundries take on an important role in MEMS Manufacturing. “As the MEMS industry's impressive growth continues, we must work collectively to move beyond the specialized tools and processes following a 'one-product, one-process' approach,” he says. “CMOS foundries need to adapt by developing new standardized process capabilities, technology platforms, and IP to enable high-volume foundry manufacturing of MEMS devices. They also need to support advanced packaging technologies such as System-in-Package (SiP) and chip stacking with through-silicon vias (TSVs), to allow MEMS device designers to pack more functionality into a single package. Our success in embracing this new model depends on our ability to offer solutions across the value chain, from design support and process technology to assembly and test. Close partnerships within the MEMS ecosystem, and customer collaboration, are equally vital.”

In the afternoon, Jones will examine mobile technology and the future of health and wellness. “Medical-device companies and smartphone app developers are leveraging mobile technology to create consumer-friendly applications for wellness and fitness, care-in-place, and chronic disease management,” he notes. “Today we have sensors that track sleep patterns and activity levels, 'reimagined' baby monitors that can be worn and put in the wash, and blood glucose meters that wirelessly connect to the iPhone. Tomorrow we will see biometric health sensors that look like temporary tattoos and rapid genomic sequencers packaged as hand-held devices. Supported by an increasingly rich mobile ecosystem, and an investment community eager to reap the rewards of this promising market, there are limitless possibilities for digital health care.”
