Connector system addresses automotive connectivity

Molex’s hybrid connector system delivers both signal and Ethernet connectivity

Molex recently introduced the stAK50h Unsealed Connection System , a through-hole hybrid connector system developed to provide both signal and Ethernet connectivity to automotive applications, including automotive body electronics, safety and driver assist, comfort, and infotainment devices and modules.

“An ever-expanding array of functionality and demand for connectivity in today’s automobiles is driving up the complexity of in-vehicle electronics,” said Scott Marceau, global product manager, Molex, in a press release. “By eliminating the need for two separate connection systems for signal and Ethernet, the new hybrid stAK50h Connector System optimizes space and design flexibility.”

The single-to-multi-bay stAK50h Connection System, which incorporates through-hole unsealed headers and hybrid connectors, is USCAR-2−compliant. It meets industry-standard footprints based on 0.50-mm, 1.20-mm, and 2.80-mm terminal sizes used in automotive applications. The system is available with 12- to 56-circuit receptacles and can be implemented in low-current-signal (5 A) and high-power applications (30 A).

The system also comes with color-matched headers and receptacles to enable quick identification and assembly while preventing mis-mating. In addition, a connector position assurance (CPA) latching feature helps prevent faulty connections and accidental disconnections.

Molex said that the stAK50h Connection System will reduce validation time for Tier 1 automotive manufacturers launching new vehicle models or making design changes. The system’s stackable header design eliminates the need for custom tooling, engineering, and validation time that are commonly required in multi-bay automotive device and module configurations, expediting validation while reducing costs.
