Control ICs for dimming CFLs slash component count
Devices offer ability to save up to 30% energy compared to nondimming lighting
The IRS2530D and IRS2158D are 600-V control ICs that target dimming fluorescent lighting ballast applications. The devices help save up to 30% energy compared to nondimming fluorescent lighting designs.
The IRS2530D is a linear dimming ballast control IC with half-bridge driver in a compact 8-pin form factor. Requiring only several small external components, it shrinks circuit design and delivers a dimming system performance of up to 10% for compact fluorescent lamps as well as linear ballasts. A single high-voltage pin senses the half-bridge current and voltage to perform necessary ballast protection functions. The dc dim input voltage reference and ac lamp current-feedback are combined allowing a single pin to be used for dimming. High-voltage control algorithms coupled with a dimming method provide increased reliability and reduced design cycle time.
The IRS2158D is a 16-pin fluorescent dimming ballast control IC with half-bridge driver designed for applications requiring dimming performance below 10%. Comprehensive features such as protection against filament failures, end-of-life , and failure to strike, help make the device suited for thin lamps including T5 lamps. The device features overcurrent protection, programmable pre-heat and run frequencies, closed-loop half-bridge ignition current regulation, band rownout protection. The device includes a low-input offset op amp for dimming, current, or power control. (Ea/10,000: IRS2530D 8-lead DIP or 8-lead SOIC package, $1.09; IRS2158D 16-pin PDIP and 16-pin narrow body SOIC, $1.29.)
