• Is a high-integrity serial data communications bus for real-time applications
• Operates at data rates of up to 1 Megabits per second
• Has excellent error detection and confinement capabilities
• Was originally developed by Bosch for use in cars
• Is now being used in many other industrial automation and control applications
• Is an international standard: ISO 11898
CAN is a serial bus system especially suited for networking “intelligent” devices as well as sensors and actuators within a system or sub-system. It has multi-master capabilities, that is, all CAN nodes are able to transmit data and several CAN nodes can request the bus simultaneously.
CAN networks can be used as an embedded communication system for microcontrollers as well as an open communication system for intelligent devices. It was originally developed for use in automobiles and now is increasingly being used in industrial field bus systems.
The CAN protocol was developed by Robert Bosch GmbH and protected by patents.
