Power density is critical, especially as the number of application features and functions increase and the equipment form-factor shrinks. Enpirion’s EN5395QI 9-A dc/dc converter (see Electronic Products , August 2008, p. 73) delivers one of the highest power densities of any switch-mode dc/dc converter, setting a new standard at more than 76 W/in.2 The converters are an energy-saving alternative to inefficient linear regulators, without sacrificing size, noise, and efficiency. They achieve outstanding power density by integrating the inductor, MOSFETs, and controller in a 10 x 12 x 1.85-mm package. The part requires as few as five external MLCC capacitors.

As a point-of-load power regulator, the EN5395QI meets the precise voltage and fast transient requirements of low-power processors and SoCs used in a variety of markets, including storage, networking, computing, telecom, audio/video, and other distributed power architectures. The device features a proprietary integrated-inductor technology and a 5-MHz switching frequency, providing high noise immunity. It has an input voltage range from 2.375 to 5.5 V.

Output voltage is programmed using a 3-pin voltage-ID input, allowing designers to choose one of seven preprogrammed output voltages. An optional version enables programming a customized output voltage. Load current capacity can be changed by placing from two to four devices in parallel to provide a single load with up to 36-A output current.
