Cool-white LED source answers the call for practical general-purpose lighting
Single-LED light sources haven’t proven bright enough to be useful for general lighting, but those that use multiple, individually packaged LEDs are too bulky and power hungry. The OSTAR LE UW E3B LED light source (see Electronic Products , May 2007, p. 99) changes that, producing 1,000-lm from a single compact package. The device’s cool-white light is equivalent in brightness to a 50-W-plus halogen bulb or a 100-W incandescent.
Key to the light’s performance is the ability to package up to six diodes in a single array, making them so close together that they appear to be a single-point source. This also simplifies optics and drive electronics, and because brightness has nearly doubled and fewer LEDs are required for each application, they can fit into conventionally sized housings and are more long-lived (50,000-hour) and economical over their lifetime than other lamps.
