Infineon Technologies AG has extended its CoolSiC MOSFET Modular Application Design Kit (MADK) boards platform for motors of up to 7.5 kW with a new evaluation board. Designed to help power electronic engineers evaluate the use of CoolSiC MOSFET technology in servo drive applications, the evaluation board supports customers during their first steps designing applications with the CoolSiC MOSFET 1200 V in discrete packages (IMW120R045M1) and the EiceDRIVER 1200 V isolated gate driver (1EDI20H12AH).
The evaluation board, EVAL-M5-IMZ120R-SIC, is a 3-phase inverter board that also serves as a reference design to speed up the development process. This is thanks to the schematics (PDF), parts (Excel), layout (Gerber), and design package (Altium) that are available as a download on the company’s website. The board supports all CoolSiC MOSFETs in 3-pin and 4-pin TO247 packages.
For servo drive applications, silicon carbide reduces semiconductor power losses by up to 80 percent for servo drive applications, Infineon said. It also can result in zero maintenance of drives since fans might not be needed for cooling, and simplifies the integration of motor and drive with less complex cabling, making inverter cabinets redundant, added the company.

The evaluation board integrates a 3-phase rectifier EMI filter, current sensors, and protection features as well as thermal management and heat sink. All relevant analog and control signals are easily accessible with test pads. The eval board has a 32-pin interface connector for all control signals, which connects to the controller board XMC DriveCard 4400 (KIT_XMC4400_DC_V1).
