Counting down the days to explore extraordinary technology at NASA Ames

Speed2Design contest winners are getting ready for a trip that’s out of this world

The winners of this year's Speed2Design contest can thank their lucky stars because in a matter of days they'll be getting up close and personal with some of NASA's most amazing technologies at the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, CA. On August 15 they'll speak one on one with NASA experts about technological breakthroughs in space technology, including NASA's hyperwall, forward osmosis, prognostics lab, and NASA's Space Shop.

Check out the Tech Talk previews below to catch a glimpse of what they're in for.

Hyperwall

Developed to provide high-end computing to the agency, NASA's hyperwall at the Ames Research Center can display multiple high-definition data visualizations and/or images simultaneously across an arrangement of screens. The hyperwall functions as a key component at Ames because it's used to help explain phenomena, ideas, and examples of world change. Learn about the making of this extraordinary system from William Thigpen, Deputy Project Manager of the High-End Computing Capability (HECC) Division of NASA.

Forward osmosis

On the International Space Station the only source of water available to drink comes from recycled urine and recycled humidity condensate, so astronauts want to make sure that water's clean. As a low-resource water treatment technology, forward osmosis is ideal for spaceflight applications. It uses a semi-permeable membrane and a liquid osmotic concentrate to convert nonpotable liquids into clean water that's safe for consumption. Aerospace Engineer Mike Flynn of NASA Ames Research Center explains whether or not creating a water recycling solution with 100% reliability is possible.

Prognostics lab

The Prognostics Center of Excellence (PcoE) at Ames Research Center provides an umbrella for prognostic technology development, specifically addressing prognostic technology gaps within the application areas of aeronautics and space exploration. Watch the video below to learn about NASA's Prognostics Lab from Jose Celaya, Research Scientist at the Prognostics Center of Excellence at NASA Ames Research Center.

Space Shop

NASA's Space Shop at Ames Research Center is an advanced manufacturing, design, and rapid-prototyping lab open for use by the professional and student workforce. Find out why Space Shop is unique and what type of equipment is available in the Space Shop from Project engineer for the Advanced Digital Materials and Manufacturing for Space (ADMMS) initiative, Sarah Hovespian.

Don't worry if you missed out on your chance to go behind the scenes at NASA Ames. There's plenty of time to enter to win a behind-the-scenes trip at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The drawing will be held on October 2, but why wait? Enter now at  speed2design.com
