Reddit user David Trinidad and his wife, Ivonne, discovered they were expecting a child from her Fitbit data. The fitness tracker is known for capturing all types of data in real-time related to health.
The couple first noticed her heart rate was well above normal and that she logged 10 hours of activity in Fitbit’s “fat burning zone” without any increase in activity. At first, they believed the fitness tracker was broken. Trinidad posted the concerns to Reddit and a fellow user suggested she was either highly stressed out or could possibly be pregnant.
Pregnancy can increase a woman’s heart rate by 10 to 15 beats per minute or more as blood flow increases by 40 to 50 percent, according to Dr. Loryn Feinberg of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Sure enough, Trinidad and Ivonne discovered they were expecting a baby after a visit to the doctor.
“We’ve been married for a few years now, and one of our plans for 2016 was to hopefully start a family,” Trinidad said. “But the big surprise was that it happened so soon, and of course, that the Fitbit helped us to figure it out.”
While this is the first type of pregnancy-reveal story through Fitbit from a user, an elevated heart rate can often reveal something much deeper from an individual’s health and wellness. A month ago, Fitbit also captured an erratic, fluctuating heart rate when a user was broken up with.
The couple is so excited about their Fitbit findings that they’ve taken to Twitter and Instagram as @BabyFitBit to share their progress. The baby is due in October 2016.
