Coupled inductors target power applications

TDK offers a new family of coupled inductors for power applications, delivering improved efficiency and space savings.

TDK Corp. has added a series of high-performance EPCOS ERUC23 coupled inductors (B82559S*) to its family of flat wire inductors. Coupled inductors have two windings that share a single magnetic core, offering higher flexibility in applications.

“Since the two windings are coupled, the ripple current is reduced, which improves efficiency,” TDK said. In addition, by using coupled inductors instead of two chokes, it saves significant space on the circuit board, the company added.

These EPCOS ERU23 inductors are suited for dual-phase buck converters, boost converters, buck/boost converters as well as hybrid voltage converters (flying capacitor converters) that convert 48 V to 12 V. They target the server, 48-V automotive and general power applications.

The coupled inductors offer high saturation currents and low DC resistance. The series is comprised of six types with a coupled inductance range from 1.4 µH to 4.1 µH and saturation currents from 50 A to 97 A. Depending on the type, the DC resistance of a single winding is 0.82 mΩ to 1.85 mΩ. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 150°C.

The AEC-Q200-qualified and RoHS-compliant components measure 26.8 × 13.8 mm2. Heights vary between 13.7 mm and 14.0 mm, depending on the type. The devices can be picked and placed automatically.
