Court finds Sprint guilty of stealing two patents, imposes $30 million fine

Mega mobile operator loses to smaller company in court and must now pay up

Prism Technologies, a company that makes money licensing its patents, has won a court battle against mega mobile operator Sprint, which it accused of stealing and using its patents.

The jury in the Nebraska courtroom found Sprint guilty of using two of Prism’s patents, and ordered the company to pay $30 million to cover damages.

This is not the first time Prism has taken a large technology company to court. It has also accused T-Mobile, Verizon, and US Cellular of improperly using its patents. All of these cases are pending.

The patents Prism accused Sprint of stealing cover ways to “manage access to protected computer resources.” Greg Duman, Prism’s president, said the damage award was “further validation” of the value of the inventions to which it owns its rights.

Worth noting: Prism had a case involving the same technology against AT&T, but it was settled before ever reaching court.

On Prism’s website, the company claims 30 other businesses, including Microsoft, Adobe, Blackberry, and Bank of America, have licensed the technology it patented.

In a statement following the court’s decision, Sprint said it will pursue “post-trial motions” to contest the judgement.
