Cree has just unveiled a new retrofit LED lamp designed to replace 40W and 60W household incandescent while maintaining that same legacy look. An air-flow-based thermal design coupled with the use of fewer LEDs at higher currents permits the bulb to retail for a low price of $7.97 at Home Depot.
The new incandescent-looking bulb is a departure from Cree’s previous highly acclaimed 40W and 60W LED lamps from March 2013, when it entered the market, as well as the 75W and 100W equivalent of A-lamps; all of whom share the same internal design. By contrast, the latest design does not have the silver metal heat sinks inherent in the majority of low-cost LED bulbs, yet somehow produces greater optical performance at a lower cost.
The new bulb design is called 4Flow Filament Design and features LED mounted on a central vertical structure, and conducts heat using slits at the base and tope to allow air-flow across the bulb, along with a thermal surface to which they are mounted, as oppose to a metal tower along the base. The bulb weighs two ounces and are rated for 25,000 hours of use.
