Current sense resistors save energy

Bourns’s new current sense resistors deliver high power, low resistance and low TCR for accurate current measurement in power electronics designs.

Bourns, Inc. has released a new series of four high power, ultra-low ohmic current sense resistors. These current measurement devices are designed to help save energy and maximize sensing performance in power electronics designs.

“Current sense resistors are increasingly being used in higher power applications due to their precise measurement accuracy and relatively low cost compared to other technologies,” Bourns said.

The four CSI Model Series feature low temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) for operating accuracy over a wide temperature range and long-term stability. Together, the very low resistance levels, low thermal electromagnetic force (EMF) and high-power handling capabilities make them suitable for a variety of industrial and consumer applications and power electronics including battery management systems (BMS), switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) and motor drives.

The Model CSI Series is constructed with electron beam welded (EBW) resistive and copper alloy terminals. Bourns said the metal alloy current sensing element supports low thermal EMF and low TCRs of ±50 PPM/°C in the 20°C to 60 °C temperature range.

The series is available in two- and four-terminal options. The two-terminal models are offered in three footprint sizes: 59303920 and 2512. The four-terminal devices, in a 4026 size, allow for very precise four-wire Kelvin (K) resistance measurement, Bourns said.

All four models provide resistance values as low as 0.2 milliohms, power ratings of up to 15 W and a range of low resistance options. Available now, the devices are RoHS compliant and halogen-free.
