If a marketing campaign is ever planned for the Dew Drops LED lamp, or the other curved lamps spotlighting this year’s Light and Building show in Frankfurt, it would be filled with relaxation and new age music. Just imagine the following scenario: You wake to soothing sound of “New Age’s Greatest Hits Volume 2, Peruvian Flute Edition” flowing out of your alarm clock, harkening the promise of a new and eventful day. You reach out and activate your Dew Drops, bathing your face in the warm ethereal light of its LED configuration. (Yes, I am being sarcastic – I can't seem to decide if the lamps are elegant or pretentious.)
Dew Drops
Dew Drops is an avant-garde lamp created by lighting designer Ingo Maurer, and is made from transparent film mounted with LEDS. It can be hung as you see fit or attached affixed on the two adjustable metallic rods protruding from a metal base, creating a whole slew of interior design possibilities.
The light source measures 2,600 lumen and 23 Watts with a color rendering index of 90. The foil measures 42 cm by 30 cm, the rods are 28 cm in length, and the metal base measures 13 cm by 19 cm. Pricing and availability are yet to be determined.
The “OLED Table Lamp”
Another aesthetically pleasing, albeit expensive “curved lamp” to grace the Frankfurt Light and Building show comes from LG. Titled simply the “OLED Table Lamp,” this device employs the company’s signature curved OLED display and claims to be the first lamp to use a curved OLED panel as a light source.
OLED Table Lamp embraces the growing Internet-of-Things movement, making it controllable with the use of a smart phone or tablet. Users can wirelessly fiddle with lighting modes such as “movie” or “relax.” No pricing information is available for this product either, although LG plans to incorporate it as a flagship product to compete against lighting giant, Philips.
