DC/DC controller drives LED headlamps without a microcontroller

Infineon introduces a LITIX Power dual-channel DC/DC controller that can drive LED headlamps without the need for an additional microcontroller.

Infineon Technologies AG has expanded its LITIX Power family with a dual-channel, stand-alone DC/DC controller. The company claims the new TLD6098-2ES is the first product that can drive a full LED headlamp without an additional microcontroller. The controller can also operate the four standard LED front-light functions: high beam (HB), low beam (LB), daytime running lights (DRL), and turn signal (TURN). LITIX Power products can also be used as a voltage supply for animation in exterior LED lighting.

The TLD6098-2ES is a multi-topology controller, enabling boost, buck, SEPIC, and flyback topologies. The integrated PMOS gate drivers provide high-side load disconnection to dim the LED brightness and to ensure system reliability, said Infineon.

The controller also integrates a spread spectrum modulator to improve the EMC performance and built-in diagnosis and protection features, which are designed for LED drivers. Each channel of TLD6098-2ES offers both analog and PWM dimming for precise LED brightness control.

Key specifications include a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 60 V, enabling the support of 24-V battery system applications, and a switching frequency range from 100 kHz to 500 kHz with the spread spectrum modulator. The current accuracy is 3.5% over the operating temperature range from -40°C  to 150°C.
