Death of a technology: Samsung to cease production of plasma TVs

Citing less demand for the technology, Samsung has announced it will scrap production of its plasma television sets by November 30 of this year.

The company joins a growing roster of big name corporations that are moving forward without this line of technology; this includes Panasonic, Sony, and Hitachi. According to Tech Radar, LG is expected to make a similar announcement soon. 

The reason why plasmas televisions have fallen out of favor with today’s customer has less to do with performance and more so has to do with the physical needs the set requires. The televisions use electrically charged ionized gases to provide bright images with deep blacks and high frame rates. Those who own the TVs are quoted as saying it provides superior imagery, especially when it comes to watching films and sporting events. 

But the technology is needy. To charge the gases, the TVs require more electricity than other models. Also, the television sets themselves are heavier and a bit more bulky than the lightweight, sleek looking LED / LCD TV alternatives on the market now. 

Samsung said that the falling demand would lead the company to shift its focus toward the production of curved and ultra-high-definition TVs instead. 

“We remain committed to providing consumers with products that meet their need,” the company told CNET.
