Dell introduces rugged tablet to withstand sand, extreme temperatures, and other harsh conditions

Dell released its Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet designed for durability.

On July 21, 2015, Dell introduced its first fully rugged, war-zone withstanding tablet. The Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet is designed to withstand water spills, extreme temperatures between -20 and 145 degrees Fahrenheit, sand and dust particles, and drops from over four feet.

Benefits include: the elimination of screen cracking and the utter regret that follows, no longer worrying about soaking it in rice for hours every time water seeps in, and being able to bring it to the beach without any sand getting in it. Dell hit the nail on the head with this one.

The tablet is ideal for the military, emergency response crews, industrial work, and adventuring. Dell says it can even survive an “explosive atmosphere.” The 11.6-inch multi-touch HD screen can also be used with work gloves in bright sunlight.

The tablet is the newest addition to Dell’s Rugged portfolio, including the Latitude 12 Rugged Extreme flip-hinge convertible notebook, the Latitude 14 Extreme notebook, and the Latitude 14 Rugged notebook. The Rugged Tablet has up to 12 hours of battery life with two 2-cell batteries. It has fourth generation “quad-cooling” thermal management and powerful fifth generation Intel Core M processors equipped with Windows 8.1 and up to 512GB of storage.

The device also features a durable “pogo-pin” interface for component expansion when needed and the ability to pair with an extensive ecosystem including desk dock, vehicle dock, and keyboard.

“Whether it’s a first responder to an emergency or an avid outdoorsman scaling an untouched summit for the first time, Dell’s Latitude 12 Rugged Tablet is built to deliver the performance they need, wherever they need it, without worrying about what their environment throws at them,” said Drew Moore, executive director and general Manager, Rugged Mobility Products at Dell.

Dell has not yet released the pricing for this new tablet, but we expect it will be pricy. With durability comes expense. The tablet will be available for sale online in the U.S. by the end of this month.
