Design 3-D objects by remotely commanding a giant Robochop arm

Beginning in March, you’ll be able to download the Robochop app and remotely control one of four giant robotic arms.

With the app, you’ll instruct Robochop to grab and sculpt a prefabricated 50 x 50 x 50 cm foam cube using an external hot wire tool.

Once the manufacturing process is complete each custom object will be packaged and sent to users anywhere in the world.

Users can enjoy creative freedom since the cubes can be transformed into ordinary objects like stools and coffee tables or even more abstract constructions.

The four carving robots, created by designers Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram, will be on display hacking through 2,000 polystyrene blocks on March 16 at the CeBIT computer expo in Germany.

Watch Robochop at work in the video below.

The robots are part of a fully functional experimental set-up that uses automaton technology and virtual systems to translate three-dimensional ideas into physical objects.

Weisshaar and Kram envision that in the near future consumers will be able to directly access industrial production equipment.

On March 4, 2015 be sure to visit Robochop’s website and begin creating.
