Design-easing LED arrays have top efficacy

With outputs from 500 to 5,000 lm and efficacies as high as 146 lm/W (5,000K at 25°C junction temperature), the latest four members of the CXA white LED array series — the CXA1507, 1512, 2520, and 2530 — suit applications ranging from LED replacement lamps to commercial downlights. Optimized for ease of integration, the arrays are intended for use as the single LED component in a light source, emulating the single-filament appearance of traditional lighting products while simplifying design, manufacturing, and inventory management. Hence attractive lighting products can get to market sooner with lower manufacturing costs.

The LED arrays are available in the manufacturer’s EasyWhite binning, which offers 2- and 4-step McAdams-elipse control of color variation for CCTs from 2,700K to 5,000K at an operating junction temperature of 85°C, Thus users can ensure high color consistency in their designs under real-world operating conditions. Minimum CRIs from 70 to 90 are available, depending on color temperature.

Each array model delivers a different range of outputs, starting with the CXA1507, which can provide 550 to 1,000 lm, up to the CXA2530, which provides 2,000 to 5,000 lm. The arrays come in two ceramic packages — one for lower and one for higher lm output — that differ in size. Both packages are small and optimized with pads that not only simplify hand soldering, but are also compatible with commonly used connectors from Tyco, Molex, and Mekoda. The packages also are designed to ease the addition of common optical reflectors.

As a design example, use of the CXA1512 in a 120W-equivalent PAR38 can offer breakthrough performance: light output of 1,227 lm from 17.5 W, for an efficacy of 70 lm/W. Not only is this performance better than with other LED arrays, it comes from a 9-mm-diameter optical spot, versus 14 to 19 mm for competitors, for more light with a smaller reflector.
