Digi-Key Corporation Announces Stock on Tyco Electronics New Silicon ESD Protection Devices

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minnesota – February 01, 2010 — Electronic components distributor Digi-Key Corporation, recognized by design engineers as having the industry's broadest selection of electronic components available for immediate shipment, today announced it has stock on Tyco Electronics' new Silicon electrostatic discharge (SESD) protection devices.

These SESD protection devices are now available for purchase on Digi-Key's global websites and will be featured in future print and online catalogs. These devices help protect electronic circuits against damage caused by electrostatic discharge events and help improve reliability of portable electronics including mobile phones, MP3 players, PDAs and digital cameras.

With a 0201-sized footprint, Tyco Electronics' SESD devices offer designers flexibility in space-constrained applications. The SESD0201C-006-058 device is bidirectional, has an ultra-low capacitance of 0.6 picofarad (pF), and is suitable for protecting very-high-speed data lines, such as USB and HDMI, or low-voltage antenna ports. The SESD0201C-120-058 device has a higher capacitance of 12pF and can be used for low-speed generic interfaces such as keypads, power buttons, speakers and microphone ports in portable electronics. Both devices offer 8kV contact and 15kV air discharge protection per the IEC61000-4-2 standard.

“As integrated circuits shrink, so does their ability to withstand ESD stress, thereby increasing the risk of circuit damage,” said Patrick Hibbs, Global Communication Systems Marketing and ESD Business Manager for Tyco Electronics' Raychem Circuit Protection Products. “Our new SESD product line helps designers faced with difficult board routing and space requirements. New micro-USB and micro-HDMI connections in portable electronics are excellent examples of applications where miniature surface-mount passives can help provide a robust, space-saving and cost-effective ESD protection solution.”

The SESD0402S-005-054 device is an ultra-low capacitance SOD-923 (i.e. 0402'sized) package with a typical capacitance of 0.5pF and a 10kV contact discharge rating, per IEC61000-4-2, for use with digital applications such as USB and HDMI.

“These SESD protection devices are yet another example of a great product from Tyco Electronics,” said Jeff Shafer, Digi-Key's vice president of interconnect, passive and electromechanical product. “We are confident these SESD protection devices will be valuable components for our customers worldwide. We are excited to add them to our broad product offering of more than 425,000 parts ready for off-the-shelf delivery.”
