Digital ambient-light sensor’s response truly matches that of human eye

The eye is a very precise sensor, adapting to changing light conditions at, well, the blink of an eye. Previous light sensors have tried to match human eye performance using dual CMOS optical sensors, using one device to measure only IR and subtracting it from the other to make the system sensitive only to visible light. Unfortunately, the resultant response curve wasn’t really a duplicate for how the human eye responds to the same light.

The SFH 5712 is the first and only digital ambient light sensor that perfectly matches the sensitivity of the human eye, and thus allows displays to react in a way that is people compatible. By matching the human eye sensitivity across the spectrum, the sensor addresses the problem of maintaining a clearly legible display in different ambient-light conditions — consider the case of satellite navigation displays, where legibility is extremely critical — as well the problem of battery drain and reduced service life — a major concern for devices such as cell phones, handheld GPS systems, and laptops. It is also the only sensor that offers not only standard I2 C data rates, but also high-speed rates to 3.4 MHz.
