Digital flyback controller supports range of LED drivers

Infineon’s constant current flyback controller with a high power factor and primary-side regulation provides built-in features that enable fast design cycles

By Gina Roos, editor-in-chief

Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the XDPL8210, a constant current flyback controller with a high power factor and primary-side regulation, as part of its XDP portfolio of LED driver ICs. Offering high performance and high reliability, the digital flyback controller offers a power factor of more than 0.9, and total harmonic distortion of less than 15% over a wide load and input range.

Designed for constant current, single-stage driver designs, the XDPL8210 uses a PWM dimming input signal, and modulates the output current amplitude proportional to the duty cycle. A dim-to-off mode offers a standby power of less than 100 mW. The output voltage can be varied by a factor of three. The flyback IC offers flicker-free dimming below 1%, and a limited power mode improves functional safety.

As a member of the XDPL family with a digital core, the XDPL8210 quasi-resonant flyback controller supports a variety of LED driver products, based on the same hardware design, which improves supply chain efficiency by eliminating the need to stock multiple controllers.

Key features include:

  • Programmable constant-current output with primary-side regulation
  • Dimming with PWM input and analog output current modulation
  • Supports AC and DC input
  • Nominal input voltage range of 100 VAC – 277 VAC or 127 VDC – 430 VDC
  • Reference board efficiency is >90%
  • Power factor: >0.9 and THD:
  • Highly accurate primary side control output current typ. ±2%
  • Temperature guard with adaptive thermal management with on-chip sensor
  • Digital control selects automatically best mode of operation, depending on actual requirements
  • Tunable, digital parameters
  • Configurable brown-out and brown-in protections
  • Relevant error conditions are monitored and protected

The XDPL8210 supports the IEC61000-3-2 class C standard, making the device well-suited for contemporary LED luminaires. The new XDPL8210 in a DSO-8 package is available now.
