Digital power supplies take control to the next level

8-bit microcontroller handles housekeeping and reduces parts count

The first in a series of digitally controlled power supplies, the EFE-300 and EFE-400 embedded front-end supplies provide 300 and 400 W, respectively. The supplies have an integrated magnetics transformer to increase efficiency and digital control to optimize the current limit and start-up characteristics.

The EFE-400 is a single output supply that delivers 530-W peak power capability for 10 s and offers 90% efficiency with nominal outputs of 12 V/33.3 A or 24 V/16.7 A. The EFE-300 delivers 400 W for 10-s nominal outputs of 12 V/25 A or 24 V/12.5 A.

The EFE Series employs an 8-bit microcontroller for digital control of the output and to handle housekeeping routines. This provides a 25% parts-count reduction to achieve a 45% smaller and up to 56% lighter design compared to similar products. Power densities of up to 22 W/in.3 are achieved under peak load conditions and 16.6 W/in.3 under continuous loading.

The supplies do not need an optoisolator. All models can be precisely factory-programmed to accommodate non-standard system voltages. An additional 12-V/0.25-A fan-supply output is also available and all models operate from a 90 to 264-Vac input. The 300-W supply is 3 x 5 x 1.34-in. and the 400-W is 3 x 6 x 1.34-in. and both fit into 1U spaces. Typical applications include broadcast, instrumentation, industrial, ATE, automation, routers, servers, and security networks. (From $150 ea/500 — available now.)
