DSO series offers broad flexibility
A wide range of features and options, including a low-cost color option,
allows the user to tailor these scopes to specific applications
Start with a digital oscilloscope that provides satisfactory bandwidth,
sample rate, and memory depth for a wide variety of applications. Then add
an exceptionally broad list of measurement, analysis, storage,
documentation, and display options, and you come up with a truly
multidimensional waveform acquisition and analysis system. That's what
Gould has done with its DataSYS 700 Series digital storage oscilloscope.
The lowest-cost model in the series, the DataSYS 730, starts off with a
four-channel (2 + 2), 150-MHz scope that has a 100-MHz sampling rate,
50-Kword memory per channel, 360 Kbytes of nonvolatile RAM, and a 7-in.
monochrome display. Also included with the Model 730 are
waveform-processing capability (limits testing and averaging); automatic
setup of vertical, horizontal, and triggering controls; status display of
current instrument settings; and a wide variety of Y-T measurements (rise
time and fall time, frequency, period, duty cycle, pulse width, and more).
IEEE-488.2 and RS-423 interfaces, as well as four probes, are also
standard. The base price of the DataSYS 730 is $6,990, making it the
lowest-priced color DSO available. A wide assortment of options is
described later. Next up in the series is the DataSYS Model 720. This
model is virtually identical to the Model 730. The only major difference is
that it incorporates a color display, which can be a very useful feature
with multiple-channel DSOs. A 6-in. liquid-crystal color display permits
independent control of traces and graticule by the user. The price of the
Model 720 is $7,500. Like the DataSYS Model 730, a wide assortment of
options is available for use with the Model 720. For the user who needs
four full-channel, rather than simply 2 + 2-channel capability, there are
DataSYS Models 740 and 750. The 740 incorporates the liquid-crystal
display, while the 750 comes with the monochrome display. Aside from the
full four-channel capability, DataSYS Models 740 and 750 provide the same
features and performance as Models 720 and 730. Prices for Models 740 and
750 are $000 and $000, respectively.
A bundle of options A broad array of options–actually too many to
describe here–tailors DataSYS scopes to specific applications. All of
these options can be fitted to any of the four scopes. Many of the key
DataSYS options are described below. X-Y measurement software. Software
permits automatic measurement of absolute or relative measurements,
including Δ>Y/ΔX, ΔY x ΔX,
measurements are standard in all models.) Analysis software. Arithmetic
functions include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Processed functions include filter, invert, integrate, differentiate, FFT,
graph, and histogram ($750). Sequence software. Up to eight 240-step setup
sequences of frequently made measurements can be stored ($450). Memory
storage. Three memory options are available: a 120-Mbyte hard disk ($950)
for storing many traces, a 1.44-Mbyte floppy disk for easy transfer of
data to a computer ($600), and a PCMCIA memory card for harsh
environments. ($450). Plotters. Two built-in plotters are available: a
four-color plotter ($600) and a thermal plotter ($950). A screen dump can
be carried out at the touch of a button on either plotter. The thermal
plotter can be used to provide a complete memory dump–a magnified paper
record of captured waveforms up to 8 m long when all of the
50-Kword/channel memory is requested. Accessories available include a
wide assorted of active (FET) probes, high-voltage probes, and
high-frequency probes. DataSYS scopes measure 15.4 (W) x 6.2 (H) x 19.0
(D) in. and weigh 34 lb. Power requirements are 90 to 132 or 190 to 265
Vac, 45 to 400 Hz, 260 VA. (Model 720, $7,500; Model 730, $6,990; Model
740, $0,000; Model 750, $0,000; see text for option prices–availability
