DSP cuts active power 40% and adds FFT acceleration
Targeting audio, biometric, and medical portable devices, the TMS320VC5505 DSP features a 40% power reduction from the previous version and the addition of a 1,024-point FFT hardware accelerator. The IC has 256 Kbytes of single-access RAM, 64 Kbytes of double-access RAM, and standby power of less than 340 µW. Active power is less than 30 mW at 100 MHz.
Also on chip are an LCD display controller and a 10-bit 4-channel SAR A/D converter. The device comes in a small 196-pin 10 x 10-mm package and includes a high-speed USB 2.0 port with a PHY, master and slave I2 C I/O, three 32-bit timers, four 4-channel DMAs, a 128-Kbyte ROM, a low-power PLL, and an RTC. A lower-cost 5504 version does not have the LCD control, the FFT, or an A/D converter. (TMS320VC5505, $6.75 ea/1,000 samples available now.)
