DSPs achieve 1-GHz
performance benchmark

Devices leverage 90-nm process technology and architectural innovations

Introduced as the industry's first digital signal processors to attain 1-GHz performance, the TMS320C6414, 'C6415, and 'C6416 devices are set to enable use of DSPs in applications such as adaptive antenna arrays and artificial vision. Implemented using 90-nm process technology and such innovations as 32-bit register files per datapath, the chips will also increase bandwidth and channel capacity in existing real-time applications.

Packaged as 23-mm 532-pin BGAs, the devices provide 8 GMACS on 8-bit data for video and imaging applications, or 4 GMACS on the 16-bit data format common to speech and audio applications. A single 1-GHz DSP can process eight channels of MPEG-2 video transrating real-time 720 x 480-pixel resolution or 55 channels of GSM adaptive-multi-rate speech coding.

Cascading features differentiate family members: the 'C6415 adds PCI or HPI32 and UTOPIA 2 ATM connections to the basic chip; and the 'C6416 includes Viterbi and Turbo coprocessors as well. All devices include 1 Mbyte of on-chip memory. (From $189 ea/10,000samples available now.)
