Heralded as a new class of instruments, SPARQ series signal-integrity network analyzers make multiport S-parameter measurements at the press of a button — and at less than a quarter of the cost of traditional vector network analyzers. The instruments’ cost and ease of use let even those who are unfamiliar with taking such measurements quickly productive, and allow such measurements to be made more frequently and quickly.

Three models are available: the four-channel 4004E and two-channel 4002E, both of which feature internal calibration, and the manually calibrated two-channel 4002M. All instruments use time-domain reflectometry (TDR) with patented innovations to acquire waveforms, measure frequency- and time-domain result, and produce 40-GHz S-parameters for a DUT. Users can measure single-ended, differential, and mixed-mode S-parameters (both magnitude and phase), and view corresponding time-domain results, including step response, impulse response, and rho and Z normalized to a user-selectable rise time. TDR transmit and receive waveforms can also be viewed, and the TDR/TDT mode simplifies debugging.

The internal-cal units use a built-in OSLT calibration kit that lets users perform calibration and measurement automatically with a single button click — without having to connect/disconnect external standards. Rugged and relatively small (7 x 13 x 13 in., 17 lbs), the units output standard Touchstone S-parameter files for use in RF simulation software. Setup and operation of the unit are accomplished with an external PC having a minimum configuration of 32-bit Microsoft Windows XP, 2.4-GHz Intel Core2 Duo, 2 Gbytes of RAM, WXGA display, and a USB 2.0 High-speed port.

The instruments come with all the software and hardware tools needed for characterizing passive devices, including a single setup screen with all configurations for the S-parameter measurements as well as DUT cables that are color coded to the instrument’s ports and a torque wrench for ensuring properly snug connections.
