Power over Ethernet (PoE) is accelerating the deployment of connected lighting systems, and backing that trend, Microchip Technology Inc. has launched an eight-port PoE switch that links smart lighting, sensors, HVAC, and Wi-Fi access points over a single switch.
The PDS-408G PoE switch, developed by the company’s Microsemi subsidiary, simultaneously provides guaranteed power of 60 W per port for all eight ports and is compliant with the IEEE 802.3bt PoE specification. Microchip claims that the IEEE 802.3bt compliance allows the switch to provide almost six times the amount of power than the original PoE standard.
The PDS-408G is plenum-rated, and it can be installed in any air-handling space, which makes it highly suitable for digital ceiling installations. Moreover, its fanless design makes it suitable for environments like offices, hospitals, and hotels that demand noise-free and reliable operation.
Microchip’s eight-port switch also claims other proven advantages of PoE such as safe power, simple installation, flexible deployment, and remote power management. The PDS-408G is available now for $980 per unit.
