Glasses that tint while you’re out in the sun aren’t new, but they also don’t work with input from the wearer, meaning they’ll tint at times when you don’t want them to, and will be clear when you prefer shade. Enter the Skugga sunglasses, which can be manually toggled between tinted and clear whenever the wearer would like, thanks to the so-called electrochromic lenses and e-tint technology.
Featuring an ambient light sensor, the Skugga sunglasses, manufactured by Skugga Eyewear, will instantly adjust the tint as needed when exposed to ultraviolet light. A companion mobile app is also available, so the wearer can manually adjust the tint and keep track of their own level of UV exposure over time. As for users who don’t want to constantly access the app, the glasses can be switched between auto and two user-defined tint presets by flipping their right arm. The glasses themselves are charged through induction, and the frame can also accommodate prescription lenses if needed.
The glasses’ battery is charged wirelessly, with one charge being good for about eight hours in auto or 12 in manual. When the battery is dead, the lenses automatically default to their lightest tint.
Another bonus is that according to the designers, these lenses protect the wearer from 100% of UVB and UVA. Different models will be offered, such as “Intense” for light contrasting colors, and “Classic” which comes in a dark color with light interior edges.
Currently Skugga Eyewear, based in Stockholm, is raising production funds for its sunglasses on Kickstarter. A pledge of 2,049 krona (equal to about $240) is required to get a pair if and when they become available.
