Electronic Products Word of the Week: Power over Ethernet Plus
What is PoE+?
Power over Ethernet Plus, also known as PoE+ or PoE plus, is responsible for safely distributing data and power over an Ethernet line to a device or network of devices. It is an upgrade when compared to the more standard POE, which has a defined support of up to 15.4W. POE+, meanwhile, has a limit set at 25.5W.
As a result, POE+ is widely considered to provide better power allocation and easier distribution which, altogether, leads to much greater efficiency.
As manufacturing processes have improved, costs for the technology have dropped. This has led to wider adoption of POE+. It is now seen power VoiP phones, wireless access points, and many other network-connected technologies, including intelligent traffic management and video surveillance.
