While Elon Musk has been rather outspoken on the dangers of artificial intelligence, he now believes there is a way to incorporate AI into the future by linking it to our brains.
Elon Musk spoke with Sam Altman, president at Y Combinator, about effectively merging AI by improving the neural link between our cortex and digital extension of self.
“If that then is widespread, and anyone who wants it can have it, then we solve the control problem as well. We don’t have to worry about some evil dictator AI because we are the AI collectively. That seems like the best outcome I can think of,” Musk said.
He mentions the notion of creating human-AI hybrids as a possible “neural lace.” He noted that if he were a 22-year-old entrepreneur, he would focus on AI and genetics, more specifically on the idea of linking our brains with computers.
Musk said we have a digital tertiary self in the form of our email capabilities, computers, phones, and applications. However, we’re currently bandwidth-constrained in the interface between the cortex and the tertiary digital form of ourselves. He believes solving that bandwidth constraint would be beneficial for the future.
Notably, Musk also disagrees with the idea that most of the next generation of technology and science geniuses will come from academia. When asked if he believes it’s useful to get a Ph.D. degree, he said, “Mostly not … Some yes, but mostly not.”
