ESD diode array improves high-speed protection — California Micro Devices

As more designs have begun to require, and ultimately adopt, high-speed-data interfaces such as HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB 3.0, EEs are faced with greater challenges in handling ESD events while maintaining signal integrity. In high-speed applications, the traditional approach has been to reduce the capacitance of the protection device, but this reduction is directly relational to ESD performance, ie reduce capacitance and you reduce ESD protection.

PicoGuard XS technology addresses this much differently than the competition, with a unique architecture that eliminates trace parasitics by routing up and through the package as opposed to under the device. Inductors integrated with ESD diodes enable matched impedance and no need for external compensation techniques such as adding a common-mode choke/filter or reducing trace widths on the PCB.

Released in January 2008, the CM1233 represents the first use of PicoGuard XS architecture. The eight-channel device protects four pairs of differential channels, as well as a 40% reduction in peak clamping voltage and 15% to 40% reduction in peak residual current compared with competing ESD diode arrays.
