Ethernet switches target vehicle networks

The new family of NXP Ethernet switches and network controllers expands the CoreRide networking platform for SDVs.

NXP Semiconductors N.V. has released the new S32J family of high-performance Ethernet switches and network controllers, extending its  NXP CoreRide platform for software-defined vehicle (SDV) development. The platform integrates NXP’s S32 compute, networking and system power management with middleware, OSes and other software from automotive software providers, Tier-1 suppliers and integration service providers.

The CoreRide platform provides production-ready building blocks for SDV architectures. Enabling greater flexibility and scalability, the S32J family uses a common switch core, NXP NETC, with NXP’s latest S32 microcontrollers and processors. This allows them to operate together as one expanded virtual switch, NXP said, simplifying integration and software re-use with other solutions in the CoreRide platform and offering re-configurable networking choices.

The S32J features 80 Gbits/s bandwidth and dual Arm Cortex-R52 cores to meet different application requirements. Port-interface speeds range from 10 Mbits/s to 10 Gbits/s. These devices meet time-sensitive networking (TSN) automotive standards and provide ASIL-D safety, hardware security engine (HSE) and MACsec ports for mixed-critical data traffic. The embedded HSE provides hardware-accelerated protection for sensitive data streams, including post-quantum cryptography. These devices also support PCIe Gen 4 for high-bandwidth and low-latency connectivity to host SoCs.

The NXP CoreRide platform with the S32J family provides production-grade networking solutions with pre-integrated software and tooling, including a software enablement kit for HSE and MACsec security, TSN stacks and remote configuration and monitoring capabilities. A virtual development kit for the S32J family will be available by the end of 2024. The solution will be available to OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers in 2025.
