EV battery cell and pack monitors improve accuracy

Texas Instruments is demonstrating its latest BMS products at CES 2023 – new battery cell and pack monitors that improve EV range estimations.

Expanding its advanced battery management systems (BMS) offering, Texas Instruments Inc. (TI)  has launched new automotive battery cell and pack monitors, claiming the most accurate measurement capability available on the market. These new devices help improve electric vehicle (EV) range estimations and enable safer operation, said TI.

The new BQ79718-Q1 battery cell monitor and BQ79731-Q1 battery pack monitor are said to deliver a high level of accuracy and precision in measuring battery voltage, current, and temperature to determine the true range of a vehicle and increase the overall life and safety of the battery pack.

Even a slight change in temperature can have a significant impact on an EV’s range; and colder weather, in particular, can impact battery range by up to 40%,” said TI. “Such variations can create considerable uncertainty in battery voltage and expected EV range.”

The new battery cell and pack monitors are designed to improve these estimations by measuring an accurate state of charge and state of health at the individual cell and pack level. The BQ79718-Q1 provides high-performance battery cell voltage measurements down to 1 mV of accuracy, and the BQ79731-Q1 allows measurement of the battery pack current down to 0.05% of accuracy.

This delivers two advantages – the true remaining mileage while instilling confidence in the battery life of the EV, said TI.

The new solutions also include voltage and current synchronization (synchronized to 64 µs) that enables instantaneous monitoring of battery pack power, providing a real-time snapshot of battery health, said TI.

The company also noted that the BQ79718-Q1 battery cell monitoring integrated circuit offers an “unprecedented” Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) accuracy (main path, redundant path and residual error seeking), which allows automakers to charge and discharge a vehicle battery pack beyond any cell monitor previously on the market.

The 18-channel BQ79718-Q1, available in a 10 × 10-mm, 64-pin thermally enhanced thin quad flat package (HTQFP), is priced at $8.39 in quantities of 1,000. The BQ79718-Q1 evaluation module (BQ79718EVM-049) is available on TI.com for $399.

The BQ79731-Q1 battery pack monitor, available in a 7 × 7-mm, 48-pin thermally enhanced thin quad flat package (HTQFP), is priced at $8.39 in quantities of 1,000. The BQ79731-Q1 evaluation module (BQ79731Q1EVM-060) is available on TI.com for $199.
