Facebook gives kids a jumpstart on programming careers

The social media site launches TechPrep.

Facebook has just launched a website aimed at children (and parents) who are interested in programming and computer sciences, but may not know where to begin. TechPrep suggests services and gadgets based on your age, skill, and interests.

If you are a teen just starting out, the site will direct you toward a simple programming language such as Scratch. An adult with a bit of experience will be pushed towards something like Arduino boards.

TechPrep is available in both English and Spanish and uses hundreds of resources including games, books, in-person opportunities, and community events. Facebook breaks down the types of programming, programming benefits, and the future of programming jobs to help children and guardians better understand the tech industry.

“By 2020 there will be 1 million programming jobs left unfulfilled,” Facebook wrote on the TechPrep website. “What are you waiting for?”

Facebook ensures that kids who pursue jobs in programming and computer science will be rewarded. “Jobs in programming and other computer occupations pay very well, and are increasing at twice the national average job growth rate according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.”

While TechPrep does not necessarily teach young people how to code, it does guide them through the basics. When kids are exposed to computer sciences at an early age, their chances to break any potential-blocking barriers rises tremendously.

To raise awareness about the program, Facebook will use Facebook ads and extend its visibility to communities. The social network site asked for support from organizations that have high interest in equality for women and minorities, such as Girls Who Code, Oakland Unified School District, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and Boys and Girls Club of America.

The TechPrep program comes shortly after Facebook implemented greater overall diversity in its workplace.
