While it could be debated whether the SnapRays Guidelight is a story to be filed under optoelectronics or Internet of Things, one thing is for certain: it’s a smart solution to an old technology.
The SnapRays Guidelight features three LEDs along bottom of your standard-issued wall outlet faceplate. The purpose of this embedded technology is to replace the nowadays archaic plug-in nightlights which, when compared to the Guidelight, not only stick out like a sore thumb, but also take up valuable outlet space.
The SnapRays Guidelight features a light sensor so as to automatically provide illumination while keeping both outlets free for use. According to the company, each faceplate costs less than 10 cents a year to power, and the LED lights themselves are able to last up to 25 years.
In terms of purpose, the Guidelights are designed to be installed over a standard electrical outlet. The “Power Extractors” technology already patented by the company, sit on the back of the cover and are designed to slide right into the electrical box and around the outlet receptacle, only making contact with the screw terminals situated on the sides of the outlet.
This unique design allows the Guidelight to extract power from the receptacle without having to hardwire the technology in, plug it in, or otherwise use one of the outlets.
Installation is fairly straightforward — the user turns off power to the outlet, removes the current cover, inserts the SnapRays Guidelight and fastens it into place. Switch the power back on and voila — the light will automatically illuminate the area once it becomes dark.
There are two styles available: the duplex is designed for outlets with two separate holes, and there’s the décor, which is made to service one rectangular hole. Three are also different colors to choose from, including white, light almond, and ivory.
The Guidelights are available for pre-order now at $15 each. Packs can be ordered for a reduced price.
